For the first time in his life (allegedly), Elon Musk has voted for a Republican candidate in an election, after stating his intent to vote Republican on Twitter last month. In the special general election on June 14, 2022 for the U.S. House Texas District 34, Musk submitted his ballot for newcomer Mayra Flores (R). In announcing his vote to the world via a Tweet, he followed it with a statement predicting a “Massive red wave in 2022”. This special election was held in June due to the incumbent, Filemon Vela (D), having resigned on March 31, 2022. Flores will only be in office until January 2023, when the newly elected congressmen and congresswomen are inaugurated into their offices from the regular general election, however she will be eligible to run for reelection in the upcoming general election.
So, who is Mayra Flores? Born in Burgos Tamaulipas, Mexico about 60 miles from the US-Mexico border, Flores legally immigrated to the United States at the age of six with the help of her father. She says that her father gave her family “the biggest gift: the gift of becoming a proud, naturalized American Citizen.” Mayra Flores grew up moving from place to place with her parents who were migrant workers. She lived mostly in the Rio Grande Valley and outside of Memphis, TN, where she helped her parents in the fields to earn money for her clothes and school supplies. Mayra Flores would go on to graduate in 2014 as a Respiratory Care Practitioner, and continued toward a degree while working in the medical profession. She graduated from South Texas College with a Bachelors in Organizational Leadership and currently serves as the Hidalgo County GOP Hispanic Outreach Chair. For more on Mayra’s policies and beliefs, see here.
Elon Musk probably has significant interest in District 34, because his SpaceX launch facilities lie on land East of Brownsville, very close to the Gulf of Mexico. And if he voted in this district, he must also reside in the district, which is nearly an hour away from Austin and his Tesla Giga Texas factory. District 34 in Texas covers a large area of the US-Mexico border, Brownsville, and much of the coastal land on the Gulf of Mexico from the border to an area between Corpus Christi and San Antonio. The district is majority Hispanic and has historically been a long time Democrat district. After flipping the seat, Mayra Flores became the first Mexican-born US congresswoman. This district may have held one of the most important elections of the next few years, and the consequences of this result reveal a lot of information for the future of our country.
This District 34 special congressional election in Texas shows that the Democratic party appears to be losing many of the Latino voters that typically vote Blue. Democrats don’t understand anything about people of other cultures and races, so their political strategy has relied on claiming to be the “inclusive”, “tolerant”, and “welcoming” party. The elected members of the party clearly don’t care about diversity, it is just their tactic to win elections. If you examine the typical demographics of Latino voters, you begin to realize that they should never have been voting for Democrats in the first place. Hispanic people in the United States, be they immigrants or natural-born citizens, are very religious, most often Catholic, and Catholics are typically conservative. Many Latinos have also come from fascistic communist regimes, and the impacts of escaping dictatorial countries lasts with families for generations. And particularly in Southern Texas near the border, Latino voters shifted even more of the vote to Donald Trump in 2020 than in 2016. Many of the Latinos living near the border liked the idea of a border wall and the nation getting stricter on immigration because those voters came here legally and/or are affected by the massive waves of illegal immigration that is becoming commonplace under the lack of leadership from the Biden administration.
It is very significant that the wealthiest man in the world announced publicly his intentions to begin voting for the opposite political party than which he voted for the entirety of his life. Love Elon or hate him, it is undeniable that the man has major influence over individuals who believe in him, politicians who want his money/support, and the general happenings of the nation and world at large. However, Elon Musk did not suddenly wake up and decide that he had become a right-wing figure. Musk is a traditional liberal, one who would be an average liberal of 10 years ago. He is yet another person who has become disillusioned with the insanity of democrat policies and positions and was cast out from the left.
There are numerous examples of this in recent years, particularly relevant once the lockdowns began in March of 2020. Bari Weiss, Russell Brand, Tim Pool, Tulsi Gabbard, Glenn Greenwald, Matt Taibbi… The list goes on and on. I am sure that the first person that comes to anyone’s mind is Joe Rogan, and how because he is not a mainstream, establishment shill, he was cast away by the left and denounced as right-wing. Joe Rogan literally supports universal healthcare and universal basic income. His top two choices for the 2020 election were Tulsi Gabbard and Bernie Sanders. He is absolutely not “right-wing”, he is just another individual whom the Democrats have chewed up, spit out, and abandoned. These people who I have listed are not right-wing by anyone’s metrics except for the radical Leftists. They are just reasonable, independent people who have watched the democrats move so far culturally left, and when they decided to criticize that shift, they were disparaged and attacked by the establishment. While these people are definitely not Republicans, they are being welcomed and accepted by the Republicans with open arms.
Less well known but also newsworthy, is that Elon replied to a tweet about his preferred 2024 presidential candidate. In a reply to the question “I assume republican for president 2?” from an account called Tesla Owners Silicon Valley, Elon said “tbd” and followed with “Desantis”. After being an open supporter of Andrew Yang in 2020, this walk away from the Democratic party by the richest man in the world is almost certain to have an impact on elections for a few years to come. Coupled with the Mises caucus recently taking over the Libertarian party at the Libertarian National Convention, there could be some major political upheavals in our nation’s future.
